It began as a simple conversation.
I had been working at our local outfitter – Outside World Columbus for several years, spending my days helping others get outfitted for adventures – making sure their packs fit correctly, helping them choose the right kayak for their paddling goals, or simply just shopping for my next trip into the wilderness.
Then Olivia Rose came in. With the statement that we need a outdoor women’s group. And with that, WILD was born. Now, of course it wasn’t called WILD, or Women’s Initiative for Learning and Discovery. It did not have a name, just an idea. But we took it and ran. There was a need in our community for an outdoor women’s group. A place for women to learn the basics of hiking, backpacking, camping and kayaking. Within an environment where questions could be asked without judgment.
Our first event was held on June 22nd 2016 – a film screening and wine tasting event. From that date forward we have held over 50 clinics, made trips in Florida, on Cumberland Island, on the Appalachian Trail in multiple states, and state parks both near and far and more.
But most importantly we have opened the doors to the “outdoors” – giving a place for women of all ages, socio – economic backgrounds and experiences to come together, meet and learn and grow as individuals and as a community.
